My Condolences to Lee, my sisters and Aunt Evelyn. With COVID and our poor health, we ( Darlene, Aaron and I) may not travel to Pontiac for some time. I'd like to share some kind words about Mom from my FB page. I wrote the following tribute to Mom the morning after her passing, along with the Eva Andai photo from 1971. I will post some of the comments as screenshots later on. I hope you find them comforting too.
"Overnight, my mother passed peacefully in her sleep. She was a very hard-working person- ie: worked harder than any "hired hand" one would have had on the farm.
My brother, Lee and I saw it as we accompanied her in the barn from the time we were born. In fact, Mom told me my playpen was in one corner of the barn while she did the milking etc. Lee, who was a couple years older, would be following Mom along and sitting on the sill, singing happily as she did the work. In those days, the milk had to be carried to the milk house. The manure was manually shovelled out of the gutters and pens into a "litter carrier". All the cattle were fed manually. Dad was working shift work at the mines. Mom did all this manual labour.
As the 60s rolled on, Dad quit his job after they acquired a better farm '62. They could increase the size of the herd. This meant more field time for him and a lot more barn work for Mom. By 1965, Connie and Colleen had joined the family. We had a larger barn for the milk cows after turning the horse barn into milking stalls and the old milking barn into a heifer barn in'64. This meant more barn work, as there was still no automated equipment for feeding and cleaning. The milk still had to be carried by hand to the cooler. Lee and I were old enough to help them with some of the manual work when we weren't at school. So Mom did the bulk of the manual labour as Dad had to tend to the field crops. During the winter, Mom got some reprieve as Dad wasn't in the fields. Even so, there was more work during the winter as the cattle were indoors. So it was more manual labour for both of them..with Mom working alongside Dad doing the same hard labour. In '66, not long after Cathy was born that winter, I recall Mom driving wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow heaped full of silage to the cattle. Of course, Lee and I could do this, but once again only when we weren't in school.
In the late 60s, a gutter cleaner was added to the main barn. This greatly reduced manual labour, but the heifer barn still required manual manure removal via the Litter Carrier. Also by the late '60s and early '70s, the farm had grown in size with more land and more barn extensions -ie: milking more cows and looking after more heifers and calves. Eventually, a silo unloader was installed and a dumping station was acquired. This meant Mom didn't have to carry milk to the cooler and wouldn't have to "drive a wheelbarrow" to feed the cattle as Dad didn't need to be in the silo forking out silage by hand.
Cheryl was born in 1970. Once again, Mom took very little downtime as there was so much work to do in the barns. As the '70s progressed, barn extensions were added in '73 and '75. This meant more cows to milk and young stock to feed and clean. Fortunately, a pipeline and a gutter cleaner in the heifer barn were installed. Having said that, Mom still did a lot of the physical labour as they were milking even more cows. Lee and I were in our "tweens" and could do more work on the weekend and during the summer. Mom went back to nursing on a part-time basis -ie: on the weekends. This gave her some reprieve from the heavy work in the barns.
By'77, I had left for University. Lee was the only one carrying the extra workload. So Mom still couldn't return to full-time nursing. As time progressed into the late 70s and 80s, Colleen and Cathy started helping out in the barn too. This allowed Mom a welcome break as she could take some shifts at the hospital during the week. In the latter 80s, Cheryl took on this role ....a torch she would carry for many years. This extended Mom's work time at the hospital - even though she didn't have to work full time at this point.
We all did our best to help Mom as we knew how hard she worked. Mom loved the farm and the cows. As a tot, after Sunday School I overheard a couple of elderly women talking about how hard Mom worked- saying "She prefers being in the barn than the house". That was our Mom. She had no fear of work and loved the cattle. She taught us the value of hard work and tenacity.

My condolences to all Irma's family;
Irma and Archie were a great couple, hard working and fun to visit. As time passed visits became a long time apart but I did have the opportunity to visit her on her 85th birthday.
When I was just a youngster Irma would come to my mother, Lucille, for a regular visit and get her hair done at the same time. Although she was a second cousin to grandfather Selisley; she was " aunt Irma to me"

I wish to extend my condolences to the family at this sad and difficult time. I will remember Aunt Irma as a devoted mother, a loving wife, a proud farmer and Holstein breeder and a supportive farm wife. Connie and family, Irma was a very special, caring and compassionate person. I remember our interactions with much fondness. We often shared a good laugh and had great chats when I was driving for Pontiac Milk Transport and picking up the milk and while visiting at one of the annual Holstein Banquets. I first met Irma and Archie as a teenager growing up on Bob and Lorna Younge's farm. Such great people.
Our hearts walk with Irma's family at this difficult time.

Beautiful and treasured memories; funny how later in life you and I ended up teaching Emergency Preparedness together!! So pleased you visited us in FL a few years back too! Dad always wanted to but never got to; Mom did in Fall 2012 with us. Were great times and they both are together with Bob & Lorna now! Thanks David and Catherine.
